How it all go started.
On July 3, 2017, Maebashi, Japan was officially declared Birmingham, Alabama’s Sister City following two decades as “Friendship Cities”. The ceremony was not just historical in the evolution of the relationship between Maebashi and Birmingham, but it was also the 200th Sister City agreement between the United States and Japan. That’s worth celebrating!
Since 2009, The Birmingham Track Club has partnered with the City of Maebashi to send Birmingham runners to represent the city in their annual Maebashi City Marathon and 5K. Runners are selected through a writing context in which the top three essays are chosen, their authors are given the honor of representing their city and their country in Japan.
